The incident was uncovered in Suffolk County in Brentwood on Thursday, April 1, 2021, when a 911 caller reported a 5-year-old was unresponsive and unable to move.
The child was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead, said the Suffolk County Police.
An autopsy revealed the child, King Owusu, sustained blunt force trauma throughout his body, police said.
Following an investigation by homicide squad detectives, the case was presented to a grand jury and an indictment was secured against the child’s mother, Valerie Owusu, and her boyfriend, Emmanuel Addae.
Owusu, age 26, and Addae, age 27, both of Orange, New Jersey, were charged with murder on Thursday, April 14.
